For new Urban Earth users

New Urban Earth users, check out this introduction on how to use this wiki.

Creating a new page

A Create New Page text box is located on the front index page of the wiki. To create a page, enter the proposed title in the text box, and click on "Create New Page." A new, empty page with that title will be created, and you will be directed to enter content for it.

Alternatively, you may create a new page from anywhere within the wiki by entering the name of the proposed page in the Search box (located in the left-hand column) and searching for it. If the page exists already, you will see it listed in the search results page. You may choose to edit this existing page, or else you may choose to create a new page under another title. If the page name entered does not exist, the search results page will inform you of this and will provide you with a link that reads "Create this page." By clicking on this, a new, empty page with the title in question will be created, and you will be directed to enter content for it.

Editing a page

To edit the a wiki page in its entirety one needs to:

  • Have a wiki account
  • Be logged in with that account

Editing an existing page

Once these two conditions are met you will need to select the "Edit" link in the left-hand column. A page with a text box will open. In the text box will be the wikicode source for wiki page you choose to edit. Edit this code to edit the page.

Editing part of an existing page

Each section of a wiki page is atomic in that they are all separably editable. Since a wiki is a community editable system multiple editing sessions running simultaneously can interfere with one another and erase one another's edits. It is considered good manners to edit only the section of the article that requires editing over the editing the entire page.

To edit only a part of the page select the "Edit" link next to the title of the section you wish to edit. The edit page that opens will contain only the section you want to edit.

How to format text: Wikicode

To format pages and add text flourishes such as bold and italics, it is necessary to learn some basic Wikicode.

Wikicode is the markup language used to specify how pages (and especially text) are rendered. While it performs much the same function as HTML, it uses a very different nomenclature.

A "cheat sheet" guide to editing Wikicode can be found here.

Adding images to a page

In order to add images to a Urban Earth page you must first upload it (if there isn't already a suitable image) and then add some wikicode to add the image to the page.

See the Image help page for detailed instructions.
