An ideal Program Associate is a flexible, adaptable team player who is interested in working on a broad range of issues and tasks. This person will run short-term research and analysis projects, help to organize workshops, write grant proposals, and coordinate the work of our member coalitions. This position is a unique opportunity to work across Smart Growth America’s programs, and to learn about a wide array of smart growth topic areas and constituencies.

Responsibilities
The Program Associate’s primary responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct research and collect data;
  • Reach out to and organize the work of our coalition members;
  • Write memos, blog posts, and reports;
  • Assist team and program leads with accomplishing specific project objectives;
  • Make presentations to clients and external audiences;
  • Manage projects; and
  • Participate in fundraising and grants management activities as needed.

Requirements
This position requires a self-starting, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, research, and organizational skills. A degree in real estate, urban economics, planning, journalism, law, environment or other field related to community development is preferred. In addition, a successful applicant will also:

  • Enjoy working in teams;
  • Keep outstanding to-do lists;
  • Be comfortable juggling multiple assignments and managing their own time;
  • Know how to collect and analyze statistically valid data;
  • Be a whiz with Microsoft Excel;
  • Remain dedicated to delivering high-quality work; and
  • Have a personal interest in smart growth development strategies.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS or the Adobe Design Suite a plus.

Compensation, location and time frame
Salary commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC. Benefits include health insurance, 401(k), and paid vacation and sick time. This position reports to the Vice President for Economic Development.
