CISC Internships

In the spring of 2010, the Institute for Sustainable Cities launched the CISC Internship Program to give students the opportunity to engage in sustainability work with the Institute. Since that time, students from diverse academic backgrounds participated in the program.

CISC interns gain hands-on research and programming experience working with CISC senior staff and partners on a variety of projects. To date, projects have included:

  • Researching food production, processing, distribution, consumption and waste for the New York Region;

  • Examining the ecological services and functions of backyards in New York City;

  • Working to establish a community-university partnership;

  • Creating a report on water resources, climate change and green infrastructure initiatives in the Hudson Valley Region; and

  • Organizing public events to engage New York City residents in sustainability issues.

Environmental Internships

At CISC, we believe that educational experiences outside of the classroom enhance the academic experience of students by providing opportunities for hands-on learning in the sustainability field. Through their internship experiences, students further their education and gain the skills necessary to become the sustainability practitioners of the future.

The Institute for Sustainable Cities offers internship placement assistance to CUNY students in all fields of study and levels of experience on both the undergraduate and graduate level. Through these internships, students do hands-on work with government agencies, nonprofits, and private businesses and become familiar with the variety of entry points into the sustainability movement.

CISC has gathered the following internship listings from our partners and colleagues.  We hope that you will find this list helpful in selecting an environmental internship. Applications for internship positions below are reviewed and selected by the organizations that host them, not the Institute itself. We encourage interested applicants to apply early.
